Ingredients

For the dough:

4 cups all-purpose flour

1 packet (2 1/4 tsp) instant yeast

1/2 cup granulated sugar

1 tsp salt

1/2 cup milk, warmed

1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted

2 large eggs

For the apple filling:

2 cups peeled and diced apples (Granny Smith or your choice)

1/2 cup brown sugar

1 tbsp ground cinnamon

1 tbsp lemon juice

1 tbsp unsalted butter, melted

For the cream cheese frosting:

8 oz cream cheese, softened

1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened

4 cups powdered sugar

1 tsp vanilla extract

1-2 tbsp milk (as needed for consistency)

Instructions

Make the dough: In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, instant yeast, sugar, and salt. In a separate bowl, whisk together the warm milk, melted butter, and eggs. Gradually mix the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients, kneading until a soft dough forms. This should take about 5-7 minutes.

Let it rise: Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place until it doubles in size, about 1 hour.

Prepare the apple filling: While the dough rises, mix the diced apples, brown sugar, cinnamon, lemon juice, and melted butter in a bowl. Set aside.

Roll out the dough: After the dough has risen, punch it down and turn it onto a floured surface. Roll it out into a large rectangle (about 16x24 inches).

Fill the rolls: Evenly spread the apple filling over the rolled-out dough, leaving a small border around the edges. Starting from one long side, tightly roll the dough into a log. Pinch the seam to seal.

Slice the rolls: Cut the log into 12 equal slices. Arrange the rolls in a greased 9x13-inch baking dish. Cover with a towel and let them rise for another 30 minutes.

Preheat the oven: While the rolls are rising, preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

Bake the rolls: Once the rolls have risen, bake them in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, until golden brown and cooked through. Allow them to cool slightly.

Make the cream cheese frosting: In a mixing bowl, beat the softened cream cheese and butter together until smooth. Gradually add in the powdered sugar and vanilla, mixing until creamy. Add milk, one tablespoon at a time, until the desired consistency is reached.

Frost and serve: Spread the cream cheese frosting over warm rolls. Serve warm and enjoy the delightful combination of flavors!
