Hawaiian rolls are a beloved staple in many households. Originating from the Hawaiian Islands, these sweet bread rolls are typically made with a blend of flour, sugar, and a touch of pineapple juice, which gives them their characteristic sweetness and soft texture. The flavor profile of Hawaiian rolls is subtly sweet, making them perfect for French toast, as they absorb the egg mixture beautifully without becoming overly soggy.

Ingredients

8 Hawaiian rolls, sliced in half

4 large eggs

1 cup whole milk

1/2 cup coconut milk

1 tablespoon vanilla extract

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg

1/4 cup melted butter, for cooking

Fresh pineapple slices (for topping)

Maple syrup, for serving

Powdered sugar, for garnish

Toasted coconut flakes (optional, for garnish)

Instructions

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, whole milk, coconut milk, vanilla extract, ground cinnamon, and nutmeg until smooth and well combined.

Preheat a griddle or large skillet over medium heat and add a tablespoon of melted butter, spreading it evenly over the surface.

Dip each Hawaiian roll half into the egg mixture, ensuring both sides are fully coated. Allow excess liquid to drip off.

Place the coated roll halves onto the hot griddle, cooking for about 2-3 minutes on each side or until golden brown and crispy.

Once cooked, remove the French toast from the griddle and keep warm in a low oven while you cook the remaining rolls.

Serve the French toast stacked or arranged on plates, topped with fresh pineapple slices, a drizzle of maple syrup, and a light dusting of powdered sugar. Sprinkle with toasted coconut flakes for an added tropical touch, if desired.
