Apple fritters have a rich history that traces back centuries, with origins that are as varied as the recipes themselves. The concept of frying dough dates back to ancient civilizations, but the specific combination of apples and dough to create fritters is believed to have emerged in Europe, particularly in German and Dutch cuisines. These early versions were often made as a way to use up surplus fruit, combining the natural sweetness of apples with a simple batter.

Ingredients

2 medium-sized apples, peeled and finely chopped

1 cup all-purpose flour

1/2 cup granulated sugar

1 tsp baking powder

1/2 tsp baking soda

1/2 tsp cinnamon

1/4 tsp nutmeg

1/4 tsp salt

1/2 cup whole milk

1 large egg

1 tsp vanilla extract

Oil for frying

Powdered sugar for dusting

Instructions

Prepare the apples: In a medium bowl, combine the chopped apples with a sprinkle of cinnamon and set aside to let them release some moisture for about 10 minutes.

Mix the dry ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt until well combined.

Combine wet ingredients: In another bowl, whisk together the milk, egg, and vanilla extract.

Combine mixtures: Pour the wet mixture into the dry ingredients and stir until just combined. Gently fold in the chopped apples, ensuring they are evenly distributed throughout the batter.

Heat the oil: In a deep pan or pot, heat about 2 inches of oil over medium heat (about 350°F or 175°C).

Fry the bites: Using a tablespoon or a cookie scoop, drop spoonfuls of the batter into the hot oil, being careful not to overcrowd the pan. Fry for about 2-3 minutes on each side, or until golden brown.

Drain the fritters: Once cooked, transfer the fritters to a paper towel-lined plate to absorb excess oil.

Dust with powdered sugar: While still warm, dust the fritter bites generously with powdered sugar.

Serve warm: Enjoy your Apple Fritter Bites warm, as a delightful breakfast or a sweet snack!
